Neck pain is a common condition that affects a significant portion of the population worldwide. According to data from the World Health Organization, neck pain is the fourth most common cause of musculoskeletal pain globally. Studies have shown that the prevalence of neck pain varies widely depending on the population studied and the definition used for neck pain. In general, it’s been found that the prevalence of neck pain is higher in adults, with a peak between the ages of 30-50 years old.

There are many possible causes of neck pain, some of the most common include:
- Muscular strains and sprains: The muscles and ligaments in the neck can become overworked, fatigued, or injured, resulting in pain and stiffness.
- Poor posture: Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time in a slumped or forward head position can put unnecessary strain on the muscles and structures of the neck.
- Herniated disk: A herniated disk can occur in the neck, putting pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing pain and other symptoms.
- Osteoarthritis: As we age the spine can experience degeneration, and the cartilage between the joints can wear down, causing pain and stiffness.
- Whiplash: can occur when the head is suddenly and forcefully moved in a back-and-forth motion, as can occur in a car accident, causing damage to the soft tissues of the neck.
- Cervicogenic headaches: Pain that originates in the neck and radiates up to the head, can occur due to tension headaches, myofascial pain, or referred pain from other parts of the body.
- Stress and tension: Emotional stress can cause tension in the muscles, which can lead to pain in the neck and shoulders.
